Who is not fascinated by staring at the beauty of Borobudur temple in Magelang, Central Java?

The legend of Lara Jonggrang was started when the Prince BAndung Bondowoso fell in love with Princess Lara Jonggrang. Loro Jonggrang was the daughter of King Boko. The popular legend of Lara Jonggrang is what connects the site of the Ratu Boko Palace, the origin of the Durga statue in northern cell/chamber of the main shrine, and the origin of the Sewu temple complex nearby.

Bandung Bondowoso had killed King Boko and ruled Loro Jonggrang’s kingdom, so she rejected his proposal of marriage. But Bandung Bondowoso insisted on the union, and finally Lara Jonggrang was forced to agree for a union in marriage, but she posed one impossible condition: Bandung must build her a thousand temples in only one night.

Then, the Prince entered into meditation and conjured up a multitude of spirits (demons) from the earth. He succeeded in building 999 temples because he was helped by supernatural beings.

Loro Jonggrang was very panic. She was thinking of something to stopped Bandung Bondowoso. Then she woke her palace maids and ordered the women of the village to begin pounding rice and set a fire in the east of the temple, attempting to make the prince and the spirits believe that the sun was about to rise.

As the cocks began to crow, fooled by the light and the sounds of morning time, the supernatural helpers fled back into the ground. But the prince was furious about the trick and in revenge he cursed Lara Jonggrang to stone. She became the last and the most beautiful of the thousand statues.

The Greatest Temple from Indonesia

Borobudur, a name deriving from an expression meaning 'Mountain of accumulation of merits of the ten states of Bodhisattva' is commonly thought of as a Buddhist structure, yet its initial construction was planned and conducted by Hindu builders sometime around 775 AD. The enormous first and second terraces were completed by a declining Hindu dynasty, construction was then halted for some years, and later, from 790 to 835 AD, the Buddhist Sailendra dynasty continued and finally completed the great stupa. The huge stone mass might have then been permanently abandoned, for it was difficult to adapt to the needs of Buddhism. However, leaving in evidence such an obvious manifestation of Hinduism was probably not deemed politically correct and thus the unfinished Shiva temple was transformed into the world's largest Buddhist stupa. After 832 AD the Hindu dynasty of Sanjaya began to reunify central Java and soon reappropriated the Buddhist monuments built by the Sailendra. Although the Sanjaya were themselves Hindu, they ruled over a Buddhist majority and thus, while some Hindu modifications and ornamentations were done on Borobudur, the stupa remained a place of Buddhist use. During the 10th and 11th centuries there was a transfer of power from central Java to the east, and the great stupa fell into decline.

For centuries the site lay forgotten, buried under layers of volcanic ash and jungle growth. As we see it today, Borobudur is the result of three major restoration schemes. Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles revealed Borobudur Temple in 1814. He found the temple in wined condition and ordered that the site be cleared of undergrowth and thoroughly surveyed. Nevertheless, degradation continued; making casts of all the reliefs was contemplated, and in reliefs be dismounted and displayed in a purpose-built museum. The massive restoration project began from 1905 to 1910, with the help of UNESCO, the second restoration to rescue Borobudur was carried out from 1973 to 1983.

The Borobudur stupa is a massive, symmetrical monument, 200 square meters in size, sitting upon a low sculptured hill. Symbolically, Borobudur is an embodiment of three concepts: it is, at the same time, a stupa, a replica of the cosmic mountain Mt. Meru, and a mandala (an instrument to assist meditation). The pathway up the temple spirals around the centre so that the pilgrim may view over nearly five kilometres of bas-reliefs depicting events found in Buddhist sutras and in the Buddha's life. The base of the temple is square, perhaps to symbolize the profanity of the earth. As the pilgrim rises, the squareness gives way to circular rings on the upper terraces, symbolizing the heavens. The rings are composed of miniature stupas, each holding a Buddha inside. The pilgrim symbolically spirals upward from the everyday world to the nirvanic state of absolute nothingness.

The first six terraces of which the first one is a hidden foot, are filled with richly decorated
relief panels in which the sculptors have carved a textbook of Buddhist doctrines and a fascinating panorama of 9th century Javanese life. A large base platform was added at a later date and remains something of an enigma, actually hiding the first terrace and its relief panels. Only discovered in 1885, they were merely photographed and then covered again, except in one corner, to ensure the stability of the monument. Upon the upper three terraces are 72 small stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha (these statues are usually headless; relic hunters stole many of the heads, others are in museums). Crowning the entire structure is a great central stupa. It is not known whether the stupa was always empty, but if it was, the stupa's emptiness conveys the symbolism of having arrived at nirvana where the chain of rebirths finally ends.

As usual, we arrived at the site rather late, nevertheless we had enough time to admire it fully. Furthermore we are more for sunsets than for sunrises, and to our big astonishmernt the sun came out at the very right moment. Stephan thought himself very close to photographer's nirvana and we were rewarded for our patience with great pictures, which brought both of us close to a nirvanic state.

ART has not always been what we think it is today. An object regarded as Art today may not have been perceived as such when it was first made, nor was the person who made it necessarily regarded as an artist. Both the notion of "art" and the idea of the "artist" are relatively modern terms.

Many of the objects we identify as art today -- Greek painted pottery, medieval manuscript illuminations, and so on -- were made in times and places when people had no concept of "art" as we understand the term. These objects may have been appreciated in various ways and often admired, but not as "art" in the current sense.

ART lacks a satisfactory definition. It is easier to describe it as the way something is done -- "the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others" (Britannica Online) -- rather than what it is.
The idea of an object being a "work of art" emerges, together with the concept of the Artist, in the 15th and 16th centuries in Italy.

During the Renaissance, the word Art emerges as a collective term encompassing Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, a grouping given currency by the Italian artist and biographer Giorgio Vasari in the 16th century. Subsequently, this grouping was expanded to include Music and Poetry which became known in the 18th century as the 'Fine Arts'. These five Arts have formed an irreducible nucleus from which have been generally excluded the 'decorative arts' and 'crafts', such as as pottery, weaving, metalworking, and furniture making, all of which have utility as an end.

Baiturahman Mosque ( Masjid agung Baiturohman) has become one of noble architecture that the people of Aceh been proud of. Baiturrahman located in Banda Aceh ( the capital of Aceh territory) , near by Aceh Market. A lotus water pool in 20 meters distance is built in the front of the mosque until the main gate.

Baiturahman Mosque consist of five domes. The main dome is rising up, and the interior of the mosque is very much beautified with attractive curves and decoration. The beauty of Baiturahman has made this holly mosque as the icon of Aceh.

Baiturahman Mosque has had a long historical stories. During Tsunami disaster, Baiturahman is one among some building that remains stood still. Though a 3m flood height hit this mosque, but this mosque had saved a lot of society’s life during tsunami.

This holly mosque was built in 1873 and ever got burnt during Holland colonization. The anger of Aceh society had forced the colony to rebuild the mosque in 1875.

Sitting in a vast expanse of green fields, the white washed walls and minerals, and charcoal blacks domes of the Grand Mosque are the most famous landmark in Aceh. The Great of Baiturrahman Mosque is the main feature of Banda Aceh today. Lying at the heart of the city completed with excellent architectural style, this mosque is really one of Indonesia prime tourism sides. The Mosque was built in 12 Century and had caught fire several time include when the Dutch attacked Kutaraja (Banda Aceh) in 1873. Another mosque to replace the former one was later built by Dutch Military Government that was completed in 1883. The Mosque is extra ordinary in architecture and ornamentation. The Niujie Mosque is the largest, oldest mosque in Beijing’s Xuanwu District, China, covering an area of about 6,500 square yards (6,000 sq. meters). First built in 996 during the Liao Dynasty, it was reconstructed in 1442 in the Ming Dynasty and expanded in 1696 under the Qing Dynasty, and now one of the major mosques in north China.

Constructed from timber, its architecture bears traditional Chinese influence on the exterior. The mosque is home to a number of important cultural relics and tablets such as the upright tablet of an emperor’s decree proclaimed in 1694 during the Qing Dynasty.

Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque dominates the skyline in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of the Sultanate of Brunei. The mosque is classified as one of the most spectacular in the Asia Pacific and a major tourist attraction and landmark, completed in 1958.

Designed by an Italian architect, the mosque is constructed on an artificial lagoon near the banks of the Brunei River circled by a water village named Kampong Ayer. It also has a long bridge meandering across the lagoon to Kamong Ayer, and another marble bridge connecting to a structure in the water that resembles a ship which was once used for official state ceremonies.

It consists of marble minarets and golden domes with courtyards and fertile gardens filled with fountains, encircled by a plethora of trees and floral gardens. The main dome which is said to be the mosque’s most recognizable feature is covered in pure gold.

Standing at 171 feet (52 meters) high, the mosque can be seen from virtually anywhere in Bandar Seri Begawan. The main minaret is the mosque’s tallest feature which incorporates a unique Renaissance and Italian architectural style. The minaret has a working and modern elevator which goes to the top of the structure, providing a panoramic view of the city.

The interior of the mosque boasts magnificent mosaic stained glass, many arches, semi-domes and marble columns.

Great Sheikh Zayed Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed is the 3rd largest mosque in the world, located in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, situated in a large area between 2 bridges — Mussafah Bridge and Maqta bridge.

Named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and the first President of the United Arab Emirates who is also buried there, the mosque was officially opened in 2007.

It’s large enough to accommodate 40,000 people — the main prayer hall accommodates up to 9,000, and 2 rooms next to the main prayer hall, with a 1,500-capacity each, are for the exclusive use of women.

There are 4 minarets on the 4 corners of the mosque which rise about 375 feet (115 meters) in height. There are 57 domes covering the outside yard and the main building decorated with white marble, and the interior decor is constructed of marble.

The courtyard is paved with floral marble designs and measures about 18,600 square yards (17,000 sq. meters).

The Sheikh Zayed Mosque has made some world records:

The carpet laid out on the vast expanse is the “World’s Largest Carpet” measuring 6,158 square yards (5,627 sq. meters). It took about 1,200 weavers, 20 technicians, and 30 workers to create the 47 ton carpet made of 35 tons of wool, and 12 tons of cotton. There are 2,268,000 knots within the carpet.

The world’s largest chandelier at about 33 feet (10 meters) in diameter, and 49 feet (15 meters) in height. There are 7 imported chandeliers from Germany which are copper and gold-plated.

Both of these records were previously held by the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Oman.

But the mosque’s reputation may be short-lived, as Algeria is set to build the 3rd-largest mosque in the world facing the Bay of Algiers to hold 120,000. Planners boast that the Bay of Algiers mosque will also contain the tallest minaret in the world at 985 feet (300 meters) high.

According to legend, the head of John the Baptist, a verifiable prophet in both Christian and Muslim beliefs, lives in a shrine of the Umayyad Mosque or Great Mosque of Damascus. The mosque stands on the site of a 1st-century Hellenic temple to Jupiter, guarding a big open courtyard, flanked by an cloister of arches supported by slender columns. The liwan, or hall of worship, running the length of the south side of the mosque, is divided into three long aisles by rows of columns and arches. A transept with a central octagonal dome, originally wooden, cuts across the aisles at their midpoint. Geometric interlace is evident throughout the building, something which became prevalent in Islamic architecture and design (much more than in the west).

Also known as the Ummayad Mosque and the Grand Mosque of Damascus

This is one of Damascus’ most significant Islamic buildings. The temple of Hadad was the first religious building to stand on the site, built in the Aramaean era around 900 AD, followed by Roman temple, a church dedicated to St. John the Baptist, then a small mosque and later the much grander mosque. The grand mosque was the world’s largest building at the time of it’s construction and was carefully decorated in detailed mosaics. It’s vast prayer hall was so large it is split by three isles, the first mosque to be designed in this way. The walls surrounding the mosque date from the original Roman temple and a mish mash of features from later constructions, including a vast pale marble courtyard and mosaic coated arcades dating from the 8th century give the present mosque an entirely unique look architecturally. Officially a Sunni mosque the Omayyad contains important Shiia and Christian relics, notably the heads of the Shiia martyr, Hussein and that of John the Baptist so is a place of pilgrimage for each faith. Women are allowed to enter but must wear a brown gown. Saladin, the great Muslim prince who vanquished the Crusaders from Jerusalem has his tomb in the gardens.
